Illinois Film Office
Film services industry is one of the most important parts of the Illinois economy. The state film industry started in 1897 when William Selig, a former magician and theatrical troupe manager, was making and showing films in Chicago. Later, Essanay Studios has become famous with two of its busiest stars of the silent screen – Charlie Chaplin and Gloria Swanson. In 1907, the Selig Polyscope Company built a production facility at Irving Park Road and Western Avenue that covered three acres and employed over two hundred people. In 2004, the Illinois Film Tax Credit has been passed in an effort to present Illinois as a filming location. Illinois film industry provides lots of job opportunities for many people. In 2007, Illinois received $155 million in revenue from projects attracted by the Film Tax Credit. Illinois film industry activity supported more than 4,000 Full-Time Equivalent (FTE) jobs in the state - an 80% increase over 2006. Tax Credit Benefits 30% of the qualified Illinois Production Spending. 30% credit on Illinois salaries up to $100,000 per worker. Tax credit can be carried forward 5 years from when originally issued by IFO. Applicants will receive an additional 15% tax credit on salaries of individuals that live in an economically disadvantaged area.
