Film London

Film London is the British capital's film and media agency that sustain, promote and develop London as a filmmaking and film cultural capital. This includes all the screen industries based in London - film, television, video, commercials, as well as interactive media.

Film London is controlled and funded by government through the UK Film Council and the London Development Agency. Film London receives support from Arts Council England London and the Mayor of London.

Film London was formed on March 17, 2003 by the UK Film Council and the London Development Agency, the Mayor of London's development arm. The agency was officially launched in April 2004 by Ken Livingstone, the Mayor of London.

Film London's activities include:

- Comprehensive information on London locations and production services, as well as practical advice and support to filmmakers shooting in the city

- Investment in new and established filmmakers through a range of low budget production schemes

- Supporting training and business development activities

- Developing audiences and access provision across the film and media sector

- Showcasing of London films and talents

- Promoting London on an international stage as an attractive base for film and media production

- Domestic and international tourism initiatives

In 2007, Film London assisted 647 productions. 40% of productions assisted were TV projects, 21% features, 18% commercials and promos, 14% corporate & stills shoots and 7% short films.

In 2007, the average turnover of filming income was around 168,000 pounds ($282,000) per inner London borough and around 51,000 pounds ($86,000) per outer London borough. The total turnover of filming income came to 2.085m pounds ($3.5m) for 25 London local authorities.

In 2007, London's local authorities recorded 14,350 shooting days, an increase of 4.7% on previous years.

Film London's Filming Partnership has reached a membership of 175 London organizations, agencies, local authorities and production companies. The London Filming Partnership works to promote filming in the capital and increase inward investment.

The distribution and exhibition sector is one of the main employers of the film industry and represents another key economic contributor. Through its audience development work Film London supports annually 60 London festivals, over 40 movie theaters and 30 education providers.

In 2007, Film London assisted 9,948 enquiries, the majority of these being filmmakers and small and medium sized businesses.

Films depicting the UK are responsible for attracting about 1 in 10 overseas tourists, spending around 1.8 billion pounds ($3.024b) a year.

Productions facilitated by Film London and shot in the capital such as “Match Point,” “V for Vendetta,” “Scoop,” “Bourne Ultimatum,” “National Treasure 2,” “The Golden Compass,” “Pride and Prejudice,” etc. all contribute to promoting London as a destination for business and tourism.

Production Finance Market

In October 2007, Film London hosted the first ever Production Finance Market.

The third Film London Production Finance Market took place on October 21 - 22, 2009. Dedicated to connecting international producers and financiers to encourage new film financing relationships the PFM is the only event of its kind in the UK.

Co-founder of EuropaCorp (France) Pierre-Ange Le Pogam with partner Luc Besson made a rare public appearance in the UK to deliver the PFM's annual keynote address.

The 2009 PFM was attended by 150 delegates from 14 countries. 54 leading motion picture companies such as Warner Bros, Focus Features, Paramount, Miramax, Lionsgate, Pathe, Optimum Releasing, as well as Filmax (Spain), Wild Bunch (France), RAI Cinema (Italy), Haut et Court (France) and MK2 (France) have attended the PFM in 2009.

“Love Hate,” “This Is England,” “The Duchess,” “How to Lose Friends & Alienate People,” as well as Francis Ford Coppola's “Tetro” and many others were presented at the 2009 PFM.

The Film London Production Finance Market was held in association with The Times BFI 53rd London Film Festival and supported by the London Development Agency, UK Film Council, UK Trade & Investment, MEDIA and peacefulfish.

Mediabox

Mediabox offers a variety of different grants ranging from 1,000 ($1,680) to 40,000 ($67,200) pounds for organizations to create and distribute youth-led media projects.

The British government has announced a further 8.25 million pounds ($13.86m) of funding for its Youth Media Fund initiative which will give thousands more young people (13 to 19 years old) the opportunity to produce creative media projects. They will be given the chance to express their ideas and views on issues that matter to them using print, television, film, radio, digital, or online media.

The additional funding will extend the fund for a further two years from April 2009 and will be delivered by the existing Mediabox consortium, led by First Light Movies and Media Trust in partnership with Skillset and the UK Film Council.

Film London is coordinating the projects in the London region.

Filmmakers' Festival Fund

Film London's Filmmakers' Festival Fund (FFF) aims to support the development of filmmakers and moving image artists' careers by assisting them in promoting themselves and their short film projects at overseas festivals and markets. (This is not a fund for feature films)

The London UK Film Focus

The London UK Film Focus (LUFF) is a four day British Film export event. LUFF was launched in 2004 as an initiative for the export and promotion of British films to the international marketplace. It has been formed in partnership with the UK film industry and national and local government agencies.

The annual London UK Film Focus (LUFF) continues to boost the export of British features. As a result of LUFF 2007, sales were at $3 million, an increase of nearly $1m on the previous year.

The 2009 London UK Film Focus event was supported by Film London, UK Film Council, Film Export UK, the London Development Agency, UK Trade & Investment and BFI Southbank.
