Screen West Midlands

Screen WM is a British agency for film, television and digital media in the West Midlands region of England. The agency's official aim is to develop the economic, social and cultural sectors of the region through supporting the screen media industries.

West Midlands

The West Midlands is an official region of England, covering the western half of the area traditionally known as the Midlands. The West Midlands comprises counties of Shropshire, Staffordshire, Warwickshire and Worcestershire; the unitary authorities of Herefordshire, Stoke-on-Trent, and Telford and Wrekin; and the seven metropolitan districts of Birmingham, Coventry, Dudley, Sandwell, Solihull, Walsall and Wolverhampton.

The region's main city, Birmingham, is the second largest city in the UK with a population of over 1 million people. The West Midlands conurbation includes the city of Wolverhampton, towns of Dudley, Solihull, Walsall and West Bromwich.

The West Midlands offers a diversity of landscape and attractions including Ironbridge Gorge, the Severn Valley Railway, Warwick Castle, etc. The region is geographically diverse, from the urban central areas of the conurbation to the rural western counties of Shropshire and Herefordshire which border Wales. The highest point in the region is Black Mountain (2,307 ft / 703 m) in west Herefordshire on the border with Powys, Wales.

The region contains five natural areas including all of the Shropshire Hills, Malvern Hills and Cannock Chase, and parts of the Wye Valley and Cotswolds. The Peak District national park also stretches into the northern corner of Staffordshire.

The population of the region is around 5.36M (9% of the UK total). There are 166,000 people unemployed in the West Midlands (6.2% unemployment rate).

The West Midlands is located at the hub of the UK's road and rail network. Birmingham International Airport (BHX), the second largest airport in the UK, serves over 100 destinations in Europe, North America, Asia and the Middle East. Additionally, Coventry Airport serves 15 European cities.

The term "West Midlands" is also used for the much smaller West Midlands county.
