"The Nanny Diaries" (2007) overview

[ "The Nanny Diaries" official poster and cover ]

The 21-year-old New York University student Annie Braddock (played by Scarlett Johansson) becomes a nanny to a family on the new York City's Upper East Side who turns out to be the family from hell.

This is the story of Annie, a young woman from a working-class neighborhood in New Jersey, struggling to understand her place in the life. Fresh out of college, she gets tremendous pressure from her nurse mother to find a respectable position in the business world although Annie enthusiastic her anthropologist's field diary.

Through a serendipitous meeting, Annie ends up in the elite and ritualistic culture of Manhattan's Upper East Side. Choosing to duck out of real life, Annie accepts the position as a nanny for a wealthy family. She quickly learns that life is not very rosy on the other riverside. Life becomes even more complicated when Annie falls for a gorgeous Park Avenue Hottie, and she's forced to explore her identity as never before.

Quotes

Annie Braddock: In Africa they have the saying, it takes a village to raise a child. But for the tribe of the upper-eastside of Manhattan, it takes just one person. The nanny.

. . . .

Annie Braddock: My desire to be an observer of life was actually keeping me from having one.

. . . .

Annie Braddock: You want to know about the dads? I'll tell you about the dads. They're chubby, bald, steak-eating, cigar-smoking, type-A pigs who get more turned on by the Bloomberg Wire than they do by any hot nannies. Actually, it's all of you in about 5 years. So take it from me, guys: Enjoy tonight, because your future looks pretty fucking bleak.

. . . .

Annie Braddock: There's a common belief among anthropologists that you must immerse yourself in an unfamiliar world in order to truly understand your own.

. . . .

Annie Braddock: C'mon, grove, why won't you shake your booty?

Grayer: 'Cause I have to make a doodie.
