East Midlands / EM Media

EM Media is the screen agency for the East Midlands region of England. Agency's purpose is to add value to talent, audiences and the East Midlands' economy using key intervention methods of investment, services and brokerage.

England's East Midlands is the fourth largest region in the country. It covers an area of around 6,000 sq mi (15,000 sq km) and is home to 4.4 million people.

The East Midlands comprises the counties of Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire, Nottinghamshire and Rutland. The region has an inspiring countryside with green hills, stately homes and old castles.

The region has a wealth of diverse locations, good transport infrastructure and accessible crew and facilities, as well as wealth of talents and a large number of small to medium-sized media businesses and professionals.

EM Media works in partnership with a range of local, regional and national organizations including the UK Film Council, East Midlands Development Agency and Screen England, the network of English Screen Agencies.

Since 2002, EM Media has made over 600 investments totalling 11 million pounds ($18.48m) in the film and digital content sector through East Midlands Media Investments Fund and European Regional Development Fund, generating a total estimated economic benefit of over 70m pounds ($117.6m) to the East Midlands.

EM Media in 2008 - 2009: 76 investments in film projects with budgets totalling 8.1 million pounds ($13.6m); 16m pounds ($26.88m) inward investments; eight films co-financed, six by first time directors; 898 crew jobs created; 18% of British features were filmed or produced in the East Midlands; 1,035 training days created. East Midlands' films seen in over 35 countries worldwide.

The EM Media's portfolio includes Shane Meadows' BAFTA winner “This Is England,” actress Samantha Morton's directorial debut “The Unloved” and Anton Corbijn's award-winning “Control,” the acclaimed biopic of Joy Division's troubled front man Ian Curtis, “Da Vinci Code,” BBC's adaptation of Jane Eyre and Working Title's “Pride and Prejudice.”

Chairman - Lisa Opie, media consultant

She began her career in the living theatre business. She was managing director of content at Channel Five, UK. Previously Opie was managing director of Flextech Television (now Virgin TV). While at Flextech Living TV, she won Broadcast Channel of the Year and Flextech's sales team, Campaign Sales Team of the Year and Media Week Sales Team of the Year. Opie also worked at the short lived satellite TV company BSB, presented and produced radio programs for BBC Radio Wales. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of the Arts, a member of BAFTA and a Fellow of the Royal Television Society.

Barbara Benedek, broadcast consultant

She was head of drama co-productions at BBC Worldwide. Now, she is a film and television consultant working primarily in commercial and business affairs areas. She created the commercial structure and strategy for BBC Films when she was head of commercial affairs from 1995 to 1997. She occasionally teaches for the India Training Fund and the National Film and Television School. Benedek also resides on the Board of Women in Film and Television.

Mike Blair, director

He was head of factual for Southern Star. Now, as director of ITV Regions, he is responsible for commissioning, executive producing and managing a team of 200 and three regional news teams. Blair is also a trustee for the New English Contemporary Ballet and a board member for TV Nations and Regions.

Marc Boothe, producer

He is a creative producer in film, new media and visual arts sectors. He produced the acclaimed feature film “Bullet Boy,” directed by Saul Dibb, for which he was nominated Best British Producer by the London Film Critics' Circle.

Boothe worked as a senior executive at the UK Film Council's New Cinema Fund and at the Bank of England. He holds an MBA and is recipient of a NESTA Fellowship award (National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts).

He is a founder and managing director of B3 Media, an award winning digital media arts network, based in Brixton, UK, which has been responsible for a number of innovative initiatives ranging from new media, moving image to digital cinema. He is executive producer on the award-winning UK-wide digital short scheme Blank Slate supported by the UK Film Council and the Arts Council England.

Katie Conley, training consultant

She is an independent training consultant working primarily in the audio-visual industry with small businesses. After graduating she spent two years in training positions in the leisure industry before working in television for 10 years, latterly as head of training and development for Carlton TV. She set up her own training consultancy in 2002.

Professor Michael Eaton, freelance dramatist

He is a founder member of Nottingham Writer's Studio and one of organizers of the British Silent Film Festival. In 1999, he was awarded the M.B.E. for Services to Film. His works include “Fellow Traveller” which won Best Screenplay at the 1990 British Film Awards and “The Conflict Is Over” (2009), drama about the Northern Ireland peace process. His TV work includes “Shoot to Kill,” “Signs and Wonders” and “Shipman.” He has written several adaptations for BBC Radio 4 including Charles Dicken's “The Pickwick Papers” and George Eliot's “Felix Holt the Radical.” He is a visiting professor in the School of Creative Writing at Nottingham Trent University and a director of Potlach Productions Ltd.

Stephen Frears, director

Acclaimed British director. Drama “My Beautiful Laundrette” for Channel 4 in 1985 was his first success. His next directing project was another successful British film, the Joe Orton biopic “Prick Up Your Ears” in 1987, and the following year he made his Hollywood debut with “Dangerous Liaisons.” Frears had another critical success with “The Grifters.” He has since directed a number of successful films in both UK and the United States, including “The Hi-Lo Country” (1998), “High Fidelity” (2000), “Dirty Pretty Things” (2003) and “Mrs. Henderson Presents” (2005) starring Dame Judi Dench and Bob Hoskins and “The Queen” (2006) starring Helen Mirren.

Jeremy Gawade, business consultant

He has over 25 years experience in the film and television industry. Gawade was a partner in an international film and television distribution company and then a consultant for various film production companies. He worked at London-based law firm Lee & Thompson where he founded the Film and Television Group in 1990.

Chris Hughes, business consultant

Freelance consultant engaged in strategy and development consultancy in the not for profit sector, he is a director and chairman of the Finance Committee for Derby University; a trustee for AGE UK and AGE UK Northern Ireland and treasurer and trustee for Nottingham Community Foundation. After ten years as a producer and presenter with the BBC in local, national and international radio, Hughes came to Nottingham as program controller at Radio Trent in 1980 and became MD in 1989. He was business development director at G-Cap Media plc from which he retired in August 2008.

Dr. Lisa Mooney Smith

She has worked in higher education for over 20 years where she has continually worked at the interface between interdisciplinary scholarship and business. She has a background in fine art and critical theory, and has more recently been engaged in research that explores how traditional arts and humanities disciplines might be better enabled to interact with the new demands of the knowledge transfer environment.

She is currently the Associate Dean of Arts for Research and Enterprise at the University of Northampton, and sits on the AHRC Peer Review College for Knowledge Transfer and non-HEI engagement. She is actively involved in both national and international networks concerned to raise the impact and profile of the arts and humanities and regularly writes on the shifts and changes brought about by Knowledge Transfer in academic and administrative practices.

David Shear, head of theatrical distribution

Starting at the Feature Film Company in 1997, Shear became head of sales moving onto Winchester Films, Content Films and then set up a UK distribution arm at The Works. In that time releasing such critical and box office successes as “Lantana,” “My Summer of Love” and “Open Range.” He is a head of theatrical distribution at Revolver Entertainment >>>>.
